Boy fatally struck in Castor Gardens

A 10-year-old boy was riding his bike almost a mile from his home at 9:30 p.m. last Thursday when an SUV fatally struck him in a Castor Gardens intersection, police said.

Police identified the victim as Mekhi Freeman, of the 7100 block of Eastwood St. He was riding his bike near Loretto and Longshore avenues when a 2002 Cadillac Escalade struck him and dragged him about 50 feet, police said. The vehicle had been traveling southbound on Loretto.

The motorist remained at the scene to await the arrival of authorities. Paramedics took the victim to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, where he was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. Friday from unspecified injuries. No criminal charges have been filed. ••
